Book Inspirations: The Last Unicorn

I had so much fun last time doing my picks for things that I love inspired by The Hobbit that I decided to do another round inspired by Peter S. Beagle's, The Last Unicorn. The film is a really great, 80's cult flick, but the book is even better. It's actually more entertaining and funny, and dramatic than the movie. Plus you don't have to sit through Mia Farrow and Jeff Bridge's terrible singing! You have to love them still for trying of course.

The Girl from the North Country

It makes me so sad to hear today that Suze Rotolo, former girlfriend and muse of Bob Dylan, who influenced him in his political views and his songwriting, died on February 25th of lung cancer. She was a lovely and inspiring young woman when she met Dylan and he was immediately enamored. You can see her on the cover of his second album, The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan. She was an inspiration to an era.

RIP, Suze.

Mon petit chou!

I have a bit of a romanticism in my heart for pumpkins. Every fall, I definitely end up more excited about picking pumpkins than any thing else; more so than dressing up, or baking pies (with Betty White!), or going to parties or decorating. I just love going to Green Bluff outside of Spokane and picking pumpkins in one of the local pumpkin patches.

Last year it was so cold so early that all of the pumpkins got frosted over and it ruined most of them still on the vine. I did however get to take home a couple of them and they lasted all the way until Halloween.

It's time to get into the spirit... (mmm puns!)

PS! - Mon petit chou means, "my little pumpkin" or "my little squash" in French!

Holy October, Batman!

I can't believe that it's already the 5th of October and I haven't made a post yet!

It's only appropriate that I start with some true fall fashion. These cute, witchy, oxford pumps from Fossil are definitely on my wishlist and they would go perfectly with this adorable pleated party dress and nail polish from Need Supply Co.!

Hope you're all enjoying your October so far!

How is a raven like a writing desk?

One of the things I've always loved having is a small desk on which to write and draw silly things in my life.

I used to have a fold out top desk that was my grandmother's. She passed away when I was only seven so I had it all the way up to high school when I stopped even attempting to do homework and it became a spot that just collected the random junk that seemed to endlessly flow into my bedroom.

In any case, I haven't had a nice writing desk since then (now that I actually enjoy writing again, of course) and I saw this one today from Rothlisberg Kollektion, and now I'm really wishing I had something like this desk.

The answer, by the way, is: Both are complemented by blackened quills.

I only go to weddings for the food.

Cherry Blossom Girl, Alix, posted photos from her wedding, and I have to say the food looked delicious. I'm seriously salivating over these photos right now. And all I have to eat at my desk are peanuts.

Like Rings in a Tree

I saw these Bono Bowls from Design House Stockholm at a store on Fillmore Street the other week (a very expensive, design-y, modern store) and thought they were *almost* worth buying at $50. But they're so tiny I would rather admire them for their beautiful design.

In a perfect world, I'd be able to trade a painting for these bowls.

Best. Lines. Ever.

One of the most inspirational artists that I've been lucky enough to discover is Claire Wendling. Her art isn't some famous comic in the United States, but her art books are some of the most high in demand in the art community. Her style is artistic and pushed to the edge, yet she carries all her knowledge of anatomy, light, and weight in every line.

There's something haunting and inspiring in everything she draws.

Chalk it up to a Nostalgic Sense of Style

There's something about blackboards that make me feel like I've traveled back in time. White boards (while superior in writing sound) just don't cut it for my nostalgic senses.

This adorable little chalkboard for sale up on Etsy would be perfect for hanging up on my fridge or by the front door since I'm always leaving little notes for my roommate and my boyfriend there on stickynotes anyways!

11:11

I always make the same wish at 11:11. Tonight I glanced at the clock and made my wish. And I wondered what 11:11 inspired in others, so I searched "wish 11:11" in Flickr and found some amazing photos all having stories along with them. There's always a story about a wish. And sometimes it inspires other wishing times like blowing on dandelions and eyelashes.

Earthy in the City.

Another awesome photo from The Sartorialist.

I love this girl's color scheme; her bag, her skirt, her black shoes and sweater. It's so earthy and I love that. And her hair color! It's pretty much the same as mine but mine never looks that shiny!

The best part? She's not riding a fixie. Way to go against the grain!

PS! I need a new (used) bicycle so badly! Mine was stolen last fall from the basement of my apartment building. And I would love to be able to ride over the GG Bridge again to Sausalito someday... why, oh why are some people so mean they have to steal bicycles??!

Jackets Galore

While visiting Santa Cruz this weekend with my awesome friends Vanessa, Mike and Ally, I happened to look into the windows of a cute little shop that had the most adorable jackets. Of course, at 8pm, the store had just closed and I couldn't go in to look at them (which is probably better for my bank account), but I looked at the tag on the inside of the cute double-breasted pea-coat in the window and saved the name on my phone.

I looked them up today; a cool little clothing line called Tulle, and found a bunch more awesome jackets! I happen to love this particular one because of the cut and the unconventional buttons. But really, I think I love almost all of them.

Knock on Wood

I found these clocks today and despite my limited income, I am nearly on the verge of purchasing one. Can you resist Furni's awesome designs?

Jen is bringing back old school.

I have to say that my respect for Jennifer Aniston has always been pretty high - she was fantastic on Friends and one of the funniest actresses I had seen on TV. Reading about her recent interview and photoshoot in Harper's Bazaar Magazine made me happy to know that she is not only a fun, awesome actress, but she also has immense respect for another great actress before her; Barbara Streisand. Which is pretty awesome to hear about now considering who is "cool" vintage, like Audrey Hepburn.

So keep rockin' the Funny Girl look, Jen.

Weekend of Wonder!

This last weekend I was very busy getting into all sorts of shenanigans and one of the most fun of those was the Renegade Craft Fair at Fort Mason in San Francisco. I had almost forgotten about it until it popped up on a blog on Saturday night and I still had Sunday to make the trip down to the marina. I went with my friend, Vanessa and her husband, and even (however easily) convinced my boyfriend, Ryan, to come along. And although Vanessa and I knew what we were getting into, the men-folk were expecting something more along the lines of clothespin figurines decorated with felt and buttons; knit hats from grannies in their seventies, and paintings reminiscent of Georgia O'Keefe. Suffice it to say, they were completely surprised and excited to see all the great art that was there. Ryan even had a difficult time not buying an entire new wardrobe of T-shirts. I however was not as easily persuaded to not purchase anything. I recently (as in the end of May) got my ears pierced for the first time (I know, I know...) and I found some awesome studs from Chocolate and Steel, with little dandelions imprinted on reclaimed silver, so I clearly had to purchase them. I also found a cute print from Hillary Bird as a birthday gift for a friend, and because Ryan and I are prone to randomly going off on picnics with a bottle of red wine, I found the most lovely hand-printed, linen wine bag from Flock Home for our future picnicking adventures.

You should definitely check out all of the amazing artists and crafters found here on the San Francisco Renegade Craft Fair site. I know I'll be saving up to purchase more online and secretly, I can't wait till next year.
